OUR PACKAGING
WHY METAL BOTTLES & JARS?
Respecting the environment is a big part of our ethics and we consider this when looking at the packaging that we use for our products. We use minimal plastic and so this wasn’t even an option for the packaging of our products.

Consumers are increasingly paying attention to the sustainability of the products they purchase, including the packaging in which products are sold. The choice between plastic, glass and aluminium in terms of environmental sustainability is complex. It depends on several factors, including the material’s life cycle, energy consumption in production, recycling & transportation costs and the recycling rate.
Aluminium is a unique metal: it has superior look, strong, durable, flexible, impermeable, lightweight, corrosion-resistant and 100% recyclable.
This is why we have decided to use aluminium for the packaging of Lupito products. In this blog we will cover why we chose to use aluminium instead of an alternative like glass or plastic.
-
Recyclable: Aluminium is 100% recyclable without losing its quality unlike plastic, which can only be recycled a limited number of times. This difference highlights the greater potential of aluminium to reduce waste and pollution.
-
Reusable: Plastics have lower reuse rates as compared to cans and bottles made of aluminium. Increasing recycling of aluminium cans and eliminating plastic is the greener alternative.
-
Excellent product protection: Aluminium bottles are strong and resistant to damage. Aluminium provides the best protection against UV rays, water, and oxygen for a product, as it provides a barrier.
-
Reduce potential health concerns: aluminium is a naturally occurring material (from bauxite) free from harmful and toxic chemicals. Aluminium bottles do not contain bisphenol A, an industrial chemical that is used to make plastic bottles. It has been proven that this chemical has health risks that might include cancer.
-
Reduce pollution: Plastic production generates harmful greenhouse gases and contributes to water and air pollution. The recycling process for plastic is also less efficient and more polluting than that of aluminium. Aluminium is lightweight, making it cheaper to transport and reduce carbon emissions too. The lightweight nature reduces the overall weight of packaged goods, resulting in cost savings in fuel consumption, shipping expenses, and costs associated with warehousing.
-
Less waste: Recycled aluminium takes 95% less energy to produce than making aluminium from raw materials. This difference highlights the greater potential of aluminium to reduce waste and pollution. This is why it is so important to make sure that we recycle aluminium products whatever they are, as we can help to make sure that the need for new aluminium is reduced. Though aluminium bottles often require some plastic pieces, like in pumps, the amount of plastic still being significantly reduced.
-
Protect marine life & ecosystems: Plastic waste, especially single-use plastic bottles, has a devastating impact on marine life and ecosystems. It takes centuries for plastic to degrade, breaking down into microplastics that are ingested by wildlife and enter the food chain. By using aluminium bottles, Lupito contributes to the reduction of plastic waste and the protection of our oceans and wildlife.
WHAT IS A CIRCULAR ECONOMY?
MEETING REGULATORY & SUSTAINABILITY STANDARDS
Epoxy phenolic lacquers for aluminium beverage bottles are designed to meet stringent global standards for food safety and environmental compliance, including:
-
European Union (EU) Food Safety Standards.
-
FDA Approvals for food-contact materials.
-
Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR), focusing on recyclability and sustainability.
Furthermore, many modern lacquers are transitioning to BPA-free formulations, addressing consumer concerns while keeping even beverages safe.
All of our aluminium packaging are coated in food safe lacquer.
To ensure aluminium is safe for cosmetic formulas, especially those with active or oil-based ingredients, it is lined internally with epoxy phenolic lacquer – a critical step that:
-
Prevents chemical reactions between the product and metal
-
Maintains product purity by preventing any migration of metal particles
-
Extends shelf life by ensuring consistency, stability, and texture
-
Eliminates odours, so your product remains fresh and fragrance-true
This odour-neutral, non-reactive barrier is widely approved and used by UK and EU skincare brands for products such as face oils, creams, and exfoliants.
Epoxy phenolic lacquer is a protective coating applied to the inner surface of aluminium bottles. This invisible yet essential layer creates a barrier between the liquid and the aluminium, preventing interaction that could compromise the safety, taste, or appearance of the product.
Key functions of epoxy phenolic lacquer in aluminium bottles include:
-
Corrosion Resistance: Prevents the beverage from reacting with the aluminium, avoiding potential metallic taste or discolouration.
-
Chemical Stability: Protects even acidic or carbonated drinks from degrading the inner surface of the bottle.
-
Barrier Protection: Shields the beverage from external elements like oxygen or moisture that could affect its quality
